Thousands of families in Brazil have no access to healthy soil to grow their own food. Most of the fertile land is in the hands of wealthy owners, just interested in large-scale agribusiness who don’t hesitate to use harmful pesticides and GMOs. As early as 1984, people started uniting in the Landless Workers’ Movement (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra) and began calling for change, including land reform and appropriation. Brazilian director Camila Freitas tracks a community of several hundred families as they organise a unified protest movement. The desperate situation drives the locals to radical actions, like occupying somebody else’s property and blocking train tracks.
